When does TL Salary Insurance cover?
You must meet a number of requirements, in order to be covered by TL Salary Insurance:
- You must have been a member of Teknisk Landsforbund and Teknikernes A-Kasse on a full or part-time basis for at least one year.*
- You must have earned the right to unemployment benefit and have been made unemployed after November 1 2021.
- You must not have resigned from your job. The salary insurance only covers if you have not contributed to losing your job. In other words, when you are not under a waiting period with the A-kasse.
- You may be entitled to salary insurance if you enter into a severance agreement. However, it must have specific wording and meet certain conditions. Contact Teknisk Landsforbund for help before you sign.
*) If you join up to Teknisk Landsforbund and Teknikernes A-Kasse before October 31 2021, you will be covered from November 1 2021 – provided that the other requirements are met.
-
How do I receive payouts from TL Salary Insurance?
As soon as you have registered as unemployed with Teknikernes A-Kasse via the Member Portal, you can apply for payouts from TL Salary Insurance. After this point, payouts are made automatically.
-
Who is covered by the salary insurance?
To be covered by TL Salary Insurance, you must be a member of both Teknisk Landsforbund and Teknikernes A-Kasse.
You can receive salary insurance payouts when you have been a member of the union and A-kasse for 12 months, have earned the right to unemployment benefit, and have met the terms and conditions.
If you are a graduate, you can receive salary insurance payouts when you are entitled to unemployment benefit payouts with an individually calculated rate.
Salary insurance requires that you are entitled to unemployment benefit.
Therefore, pupils, students, members in subsidized jobs, senior-citizen jobs or early retirement, as well as members who have reached state pension age, are not covered by the insurance as they are not entitled to unemployment benefit.
These groups therefore do not pay into the scheme.
-
What if I already have salary insurance?
If you have already taken out a private salary insurance policy with another provider, you can terminate it if you feel sufficiently covered with TL Salary Insurance.
You can also investigate whether you have the option to defer payouts from your private salary insurance for six months, after which payouts from the TL Salary Insurance stop. By doing this, you can be covered while unemployed for up to 12 or 18 months.
If you already have TL's individual salary insurance, provided by Alka, you can use it as a supplement to TL Salary Insurance and receive payouts for up to 18 months in all.
-
How many times can I make a claim with salary insurance?
TL Salary Insurance covers you for your entire working life. As a member, you can receive up to 6 months' salary insurance payouts per placement date in the A-kasse (the date from which, in accordance with the fund’s rules, you are entitled to two years' unemployment benefit).
This means that, during your working life, you can claim on your policy as many times as you receive a placement date from your A-kasse.
-
Does the salary insurance also cover allowances?
TL Salary Insurance covers base salary, qualifications-related allowances, functions-related allowances and certain types of fixed allowances. Your last three months' salary will be used to calculate how much you will be receive in monthly salary insurance payouts.

If you have had a company car and telephone, the value of these benefits is also included in the calculation of what you can receive from salary insurance.

-
Am I covered by salary insurance, if I enter into a severance agreement?
You may be entitled to salary insurance if you enter into a severance agreement. However, it must meet certain specific conditions. If this applies to you, it is very important that you arrange for a TL employee to review the severance agreement before you sign it.
-
Is there an upper age limit for TL Salary Insurance coverage?
No. Unlike many other salary insurance policies, TL Salary Insurance covers you up to state pension age, no matter how old you are when you apply. The insurance is valid until whatever the current state pension age is.
-
Does salary insurance also cover A-kasse waiting periods?
A majority in the Danish Parliament has decided that unemployed people do not receive unemployment benefit for one day our of every fourth month, if they have not worked at least 148 hours during the four-month period. With TL Salary Insurance, you are fully covered on this day. This means that you receive an amount that equates to both the unemployment benefit rate and the supplementary salary insurance.
-
I am a freelancer or self-employed - am I covered by the salary insurance?
If you are entitled to unemployment benefit, you are usually covered by TL Salary Insurance. Contact TL A-Kasse to discuss how it applies specifically to you.
-
I am a substitute teacher - am I covered by the salary insurance?
Yes, you are, provided you meet these conditions:
- You must be a member of TL and Teknikernes A-Kasse, and be entitled to unemployment benefit.
- If you return to unsubsidized employment before you have used the six months' salary insurance payout entitlement, your payouts stop at that point.
- If you become unemployed again, you can receive payouts for the number of months, weeks, or days that you didn’t claim when you were previously unemployed.
-
Does my pension scheme count, when calculating my income?
No. Pension contributions (your employer's and your own contributions) are not included as income when we calculate the amount you will be able to receive through your salary insurance.
Salary insurance payouts are therefore based on your fixed salary in the last 3 months minus your own pension contributions (if applicable).
For example, if you earn DKK 36,000 a month, but pay 4% of that in pension contributions, the 4% will be deducted (equivalent to DKK 1,440). In other words, the calculation would be 36,000-1,440 = 34,560 DKK. You will need to remember this, if you want to calculate how much you are entitled to in the event of self-inflicted unemployment:
-
What happens if I use up my salary insurance payouts?
When you have received the six months of payouts covered by TL Salary Insurance (962 hours if you are full-time insured / 780 hours if part-time insured), you must earn the right to a new period of unemployment benefit before you are once again entitled to receive payouts from TL Salary Insurance.
-
How much do I have to earn to qualify for salary insurance coverage?
Under the Unemployment Insurance Act (unemployment benefit rules), you may not receive more than 90% of your previous salary in unemployment benefit and salary insurance (after 8% labor market contributions), when you become unemployed.
You must therefore have a monthly salary of at least DKK 24.578,56 to qualify for salary insurance, if you are a full-time-insured A-kasse member. If you are part-time insured, your monthly salary must be at least DKK 16.636,43, in order to qualify for salary insurance.
If your salary is below these amounts, you will not have to pay union fees if you become unemployed. This applies for the first six months of unemployment.
-
Do I have to pay taxes on my salary insurance payouts?
When Alka pays out on a salary insurance policy, they withhold your income tax for the Danish Tax authorities.
On the other hand, you do not have to pay the 8% labor market contributions on either your unemployment benefits or TL Salary Insurance payouts.
-
When will I receive my salary insurance payout?
You will receive your payout on the 7th business day of each month, i.e. after payment of your unemployment benefit.
